Time: The future

People: Mankind

Setting: Your home

Senses fulfilled: Aesthetic, functional, nutritional

Goals: Sustainable fisheries, ocean conservation, bragging rights

Wouldn’t it be cool if you had the ability to grow fresh greens and live fish in your home in a single container? One that was manned by a robot? Who wouldn’t want that? Elizabeth Kolbert’s third book, The Sixth Extinction, was released in 2014 to high acclaim. This book is not just for scientists, geeks, and climate hawks, but for anyone the least bit concerned about the planet and the future. In this clip, Kolbert talks with Jon Stewart of The Daily Show (because who doesn’t need a little levity when talking extinction?) to discuss her work of exploring the changes occurring around the world. Would you rather plug in and listen? Here is Kolbert on NPR’s All Things Considered. The Sixth Extinction is now out in paperback.

In the world of sustainable aquaculture, the story typically revolves around the top three seafood species: salmon, shrimp and tilapia. However, the tides are changing. Check out the future of farmed fish in IntraFish’s Beyond the Big Three: The new farmed species ripe for investment.

What could be more exciting than space exploration? What about deep-sea exploration? That’s right. What’s the coolest thing about going down instead of up? There are creepy, crawly, life forms in the deep, dark recesses of the earth. Here is one freaky new find in the deepest trench on earth: New Species found in Mariana Trench.
