October is National Seafood Month!

There are many ways to celebrate National Seafood Month. Maybe you want to learn more about ocean conservation or want to cast a fly or troll for mahi on the bay. However you decide to celebrate, just remember to support sustainable seafood when you play, work, shop and eat. Thanks.

Here are five stories that caught my eye this past week.

1) DEEPSEA CHALLENGE 3D by James Cameron. This adventurous, exciting movie opened in theaters August 2014. Cameron is only the third person in history to reach The Mariana Trench, the deepest point in the ocean, seven miles down.

2) It’s Florida Stone Crab Claw season. The annual event opened October 15 and runs through May 15. Stone Crab Claws are consistently one of the most sustainable fisheries. Crabbers take only one claw per animal giving the carb the opportunity to regrow its claw in the next nine months. Learn all about Stone Crab and mix up my tangy Mustard Dipping Sauce if you get your hands on some claws this season.

3) Live in Oregon? Eat at Local Ocean Seafood, a waterfront restaurant dedicated to sustainable seafood in Newport, Oregon. Listen as owner Laura Anderson dishes up her reasons for sourcing fresh, local sustainable seafood for her customers. (Highlighted on NOAA as part of its Voices From the Waterfront series.)

4) Are you a chef? How would you like to have fresh, wild, sustainable seafood delivered to your door? It’s easier than ever now when you have the right connection. Sea to Table, an organization dedicated to just that mission can help. Sea to Table connects small-scale fishermen to chefs around the US. Find out what just landed near you now.

5) One word: salmon. Did you know the Global Aquaculture Alliance, an organization dedicated to advancing environmentally and socially responsible aquaculture, now has 179 BAP-certified (Best Aquaculture Practice) salmon farms around the world? And the number is growing. Look for the round blue ecolabel when you shop for farmed salmon.

How are you celebrating National Seafood Month?
